Never Say No to Nevis

Never Say No to Nevis

Nevis is one of the Caribbean’s lesser-known isles, but it is absolutely enchanting. The small island is a part of the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis and is famed for its unspoiled beauty and rich history. I went there 20 years ago with some journalist friends and a wonderful travel PR called Jeffrey Rayner - and would very much like to visit again for a little longer if the chance ever comes my way.

Step Back in Time

Nevis is not just a tropical paradise; it's a journey through history. The island's capital, Charlestown, is beautifully preserved, with buildings that date back to the colonial era. The Alexander Hamilton House, birthplace of American founding father Alexander Hamilton, is a must-visit for history buffs. The Museum of Nevis History located here offers insights into the island's past and its significance in the Caribbean.

Natural Wonders Abound

Nature enthusiasts will find Nevis to be a haven. The centerpiece is Nevis Peak, a potentially active volcano, which offers challenging hikes through lush rainforests leading to breathtaking views at the summit. The Botanical Gardens of Nevis, located on the Montpelier Estate, are home to an impressive collection of tropical plants, orchids, and sculptures, creating a serene environment perfect for a leisurely walk.

Cultural Richness and Local Flavours

The culture of Nevis is a vibrant tapestry woven from its African, British, and Carib Amerindian heritage. This rich blend is evident in the island’s music, dance, and festivals. The Nevis Culturama, a summer festival, is a spectacular event showcasing calypso music, street dances, and traditional folklore.

Culinary adventurers will love Nevisian cuisine. Local dishes such as coconut dumplings, spicy goat stew, and fresh seafood are not just meals; they are stories on plates, each offering a taste of the island's diverse cultural influences.

Sun, Sand, and Sea

Nevis’s beaches are its crowning glory. Pinney's Beach is a favorite for both locals and tourists, with miles of golden sand and clear waters, ideal for swimming and sunbathing. For those seeking more solitude, Oualie Beach offers a quieter but equally stunning shoreline experience.

From luxurious resorts to charming inns, Nevis offers accommodations for every taste and budget. Many of these are housed in restored sugar plantations, providing a unique blend of historical charm and modern comfort. The Four Seasons Resort Nevis is a particularly popular choice, offering world-class amenities with spectacular views of Nevis Peak.

Easy to Reach, Hard to Leave

Nevis is accessible via a short ferry ride from its sister island, Saint Kitts. This ease of access makes it a convenient destination for travelers looking to explore the Caribbean's less trodden paths.

In conclusion, Nevis might be small in size, but it’s big in character. Its combination of natural beauty, rich history, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality makes it a compelling destination for those looking to experience the Caribbean beyond the usual. Nevis is not just a place to visit; it's an island to be discovered and remembered long after the journey home.
