Discovering Crete's Windmill Plain: The Lasithi Plateau 🌿🌀

Explore the Hidden Gem of Crete: The Lasithi Plateau

Years ago we drove up into the mountains of central Crete and were amazed to come across a dead flat plain among the peaks. What was so surprising about this place was the number of windmills used for helping to irrigate the rich soils. I am told that many of these have since disappeared, but that some still survive. I hope so. It was one of the most magical places I have visited in the Greek islands….

The Lasithi Plateau

Crete, the largest of the Greek islands, is known for its diverse landscapes, ancient ruins, and vibrant culture. Yet, tucked away in its interior lies a truly unique gem — the Lasithi Plateau, a high plain blanketed with hundreds of windmills that capture both the island’s natural beauty and its rural ingenuity.

The Windmill Wonderland of Lasithi Plateau 🌬️

Situated 800 meters above sea level in the Dikti Mountains, the Lasithi Plateau stands out for its vast open fields, fertile soil, and a history of wind power that stretches back centuries. In the past, thousands of iconic white-sailed windmills dotted this fertile high plain, used to draw water from underground wells to irrigate crops. These windmills became emblematic of the area, symbols of the ingenuity of local farmers who adapted to the harsh climate by harnessing the island’s abundant winds.

A Step Back in Time: Windmills and Agriculture 🌾

Although modern irrigation systems have replaced many of these windmills, quite a few still remain — monuments to Crete's agricultural heritage. Driving through the plateau, you are greeted by the sight of these windmills, their skeletal frames and occasional intact sails forming a picturesque contrast against the expansive blue sky and the lush, green landscape. Some of the windmills have been carefully restored, their sails spinning once more, providing a glimpse of the plateau's past way of life.
